Some of my past and present hobbies and accomplishments, outside of academia:

Skateboarding. I skated for around 20 years, and have many happy memories of skating with friends and alone. I was lucky enough to skate with both Tom Penny and the Gonz. My favorite tricks were fakie bigspins, kickflips, no-pop frontside 360 shove its, and manuals.

Running. I enjoy running, and always run solo. My PB (personal best) 10K is 49:53 at age 42, and my PB half marathon is 01:59:23 at age 47. I have run one marathon, in 04:53:20 at age 47.

Parachuting. I have 423 parachute jumps, with three of those being BASE jumps from the Perrine Bridge. I was mostly interested in freeflying, and achieved the FF2 (Freefly 2) qualification from the British Parachute Association. I was also certified as a Senior Parachute Rigger by the FAA. The smallest canopy I jumped was a Cobalt 135.

Rock climbing. I climbed mostly indoors, although I have bouldered outside in the U.S. and sport climbed outside in Australia and Thailand. Indoor ratings have a tendency to be a bit soft, but I climbed indoors at around a 5.11 level.

Martial arts. At university I studied Jiu Jitsu for one year and achieved a green belt. Later, I studied ITF Taekwon-Do for one year and also achieved a green belt.

Programming. I am a hobby programmer and enjoy programming in the Unix Environment using Bash and Go. I have been working for decades on a solo development project that one day I hope to release (probably after I retire).
